Monthly Income, Growth & Traffic Report – September 2012

This is the second income report for the blog as part of my zero link building case study.

Every month I will be publish a post like this one that shows you how this blog is progressing and everything I have done across the month to get it there.

These reports will help me track my own progress while teaching you what to do and more importantly what not to do.

How to start a successful blog in 7 days

What I Have Done In September

This month I have focused on a balanced mix of content creation and promotion. Now the blog has a bit of substance I can start to invest a bit more time on the promotion side of things where as last month was mostly about the content.

Content Creation

I have only published 4 posts directly on the blog this month. I finished the last video in the Ultimate Guide To Tiered Link Building series and created a guide teaching people how to automate guest posting.

On top of that I also wrote a guest post for Search Engine Journal which I then pirated on the blog with a few extra tips in aid of International Talk Like A Pirate Day.

Speaking of guest posting, you can check out my list of best guest posting services here.

Search Engine Journal Guest Post

I wrote and published my first guest post for SearchEngineJournal.com which focused on how to use Google Alerts.

The post generated 626 social shares and 51 comments which is superb!

Especially when you consider the most popular post they published in July only had a total of 247 social shares and 1 comment – my post received more than double the attention of that post.

You would expect the most popular guest post on one of the biggest SEO blogs to melt my server with traffic.

In total the post sent 65 visitors and 2 affiliate clicks – no new subscribers :(

SundaySEO With Terry Kyle

Terry Kyle runs a weekly video series called Sunday SEO. Every Sunday he produces a new SEO related video for his subscribers. If you’re not on the list you should be – he offers some fantastic content on a weekly basis.

With a week’s notice Terry invited me to produce a video for Sunday SEO which threw my schedule out of the window.

I created a tutorial teaching people how to manage, check & monitor all of their backlinks effectively as well as automate the entire process.

I use a piece of software called Inspyder Backlink Monitor to do this and arranged an exclusive 20% discount for Sunday SEO viewers which was valid for 1 week after the video was put live.

This meant people could pick up the software for $59.95 instead of the usual $74.95.

I will publish the video on the blog this week for those that missed it.

Kontent Machine Competition

The Kontent Machine competition ran for 2 weeks and had a total of 274 entries.

The winner was Daniel Neubauer from Aurich, Germany who is now enjoying a life time license worth $37/month free of charge!

For those that didn’t win I setup an exclusive 25% discount off the monthly cost for a limited time – everyone’s a winner on my blog!

The competition went down well with everyone so I’m currently bugging other people for more prizes to give away. If you’re a software vendor or service provider and want to sponsor a competition please get in touch.

In fact the Kontent Machine team loved the video I created about the software so much they featured it on their website AND emailed it out to their list of customers! Thanks to Georgi for hooking that up!

Case Study Preparation

A lot of visitors have been asking me to conduct various case studies. So I setup 18 new sites specifically for testing purposes.

So far I’m going to produce the following case studies-

  • New domain vs Aged domain
  • Social link building
  • Ranking with blog networks
  • Ranking with Magic Submitter
  • Ranking with GSA SER
  • Ranking with SENuke XCR

I’ll be kicking off these off some time during this month so keep an eye out for them!

If there are any case studies you would like to see let me know in the comments below.

Traffic Generation

I haven’t really done anything special to generate traffic this month. I have stuck to the usual approach of-

  • Post on Warriorforum, TrafficPlanet, Blackhatworld & DigitalPoint
  • Follow SEO types on Twitter and get involved with conversation
  • Set up a series of targeted Google Alerts to jump straight into conversation

This month I decided to take my tutorials to BlackHatWorld and started a thread about them which has had 5,790 views and 140 replies in less than 2 weeks.

I also got banned from DigitalPoint until March next year – not really sure why but I hated posting on that forum anyway. Lots of one line responses that make no sense and don’t actually offer any help – maybe I was helping too much? Who knows :P

Other than doing the things listed above; traffic was generated from the SEJ Guest Post, Sunday SEO video & the Kontent Machine competition.

I’m still exploring new ways to generate traffic – got a few ideas up my sleeve including a free piece of custom software so stay tuned for those.

Inbox Overload

If you have sent me an e-mail and I haven’t replied yet then let me explain. At the moment I’m getting around 20-30 e-mails / private messages per day asking for help and advice.

To be honest I don’t really like answering private questions as its very closed and the answers aren’t publically viewable for other peoples benefit.

I would prefer people to post questions in the comments or directly on forum threads instead of sending an e-mail or private message.

This way answers are beneficial for everybody – people that do this will get an answer a lot quicker as I’m active on forums on a daily basis as part of my promotion strategy.

So if you want a fast answer – post a comment or reply to a thread. Otherwise you’ll have to wait for me to get round to the e-mails on a weekly basis.

Shoemoney Advice

Jeremy ‘Shoemoney’ Schoemaker of ShoeMoney.com jumped over to the TrafficPlanet forums in response to a post by Terry Kyle.

In that thread I asked-

Terry & Jeremy, as 2 people that have specialised, do you have any advice for someone at the start of the path such as myself?

Jeremy took the time to write a detailed response which he then posted on his blog.

It is a great read and offers some valuable insight into someone that has established themselves in the online world.

If your reading this Jeremy, I would love the opportunity to tell my story on your blog ;)

Google Love

If you’re a regular reader you will know I’m trying to rank the site without link building.

Results have been interesting so far to say the least!

Last month I reported that the site was in the #13 position for ‘Buy SEO‘ in the UK.

This has now moved up to position #5 – front page baby!

Buy SEO Position Five

Matthew Woodward

The site has now moved into the #1 position for my name, Previously it was sitting towards the bottom of the first page but this month it has locked into the number 1 spot.

Matthew Woodward Search

It is interesting to see the increased search volume for my name as I slowly build out my brand.

In fact 4 of the top 10 keywords that find my site include my name or a variation of it.

Kontent Machine / Kontent Machine Review

Last month I reported that I had locked in the #4 position for Kontent Machine and the #1 position for Kontent Machine Review.

I was anticipating these to drop a little bit as the Twitter activity for the page died down over the last 2 weeks of September but the rankings have stuck strong so far although the appearance of them has changed.

Kontent Machine Review

What is interesting is if you search for Kontent Machine review not only does my blog post show up, but so does the video on YouTube, my post on Google+, Daniel Neubauers Twitter account (competition winner) and a Twitter scraper/auto blog.

All on the 1st page, not bad eh!

Time Invested

This month I have spent about 35 hours on content creation, 40 hours on promotion and 35 hours preparing for future case studies / answering emails.

Time well spent? Let’s find out.

Crunching The Numbers

Time to get into the nitty gritty data and find out how the blog performed in comparison to last month.

Just like last month, I will also share exactly how much income the blog has generated.

Visitor Statistics

Last month saw 2,125 unique visitors which has increased to 4,518 this month! That’s more than a 100% increase month on month, certainly cannot complain about that!

visitor statistics

Most Popular Content

As expected the link building tutorials are the most popular content by quite a margin.

It looks like part 2 is more popular than part 1 but part 1 is undergoing a split test and has 2 different urls which you can see in positions 3 and 4 on the chart below.

Best Content This Month

Top Traffic Sources

BlackHatWorld jumps into the top 5 traffic sources this month and pushes YouTube out which is mostly thanks to this thread.

As you can see the traffic performs pretty well across the board in terms of visits, duration and bounce rate.

Top Traffic Source

Search Engine Traffic

Last month saw 353 visits across 61 keywords – this month Google has sent 946 visits across 144 keywords which is more than double than last month!

Google Traffic

YouTube Views

YouTube views are also up for the month with a total of 5,267 which is a huge increase compared to last month’s 3,875 views.

Youtube Analytics

Forum Posts

I only made a total of 456 posts in forums this month which is less than half the amount I did last month. These are broken down as-

  • TrafficPlanet – 168 posts (1,190 visits)
  • WarriorForum – 83 posts (870 visits)
  • DigitalPoint – 64 posts (230 visits)
  • BlackHatWorld – 141 posts (1,639 visits)

Social Shares

Social sharing activity was also up with a total of 934 shares (490 last month) across all of my content directly on the blog.

  • Twitter – 523
  • Facebook – 239
  • Google+ – 172

Those figures correlate with last month’s sharing where 1 in 5 unique visitors shared my content on a social network.

This is one of the main metrics I’m trying to grow on the blog. Having a solid base of subscribers is key to the success of the blog.

Last month I had a total of 228 subscribers across various channels which has grown to a total of 696 people.

This month saw-

  • E-mail – 208
  • Twitter – 119
  • YouTube – 45
  • Facebook – 26
  • Google+ – 10

Income Report

Let’s face it the only stats you really want to see is how much the blog earnt this month.

Affiliate Earnings

  • Income – $2976.77
  • Expenses – $98.89

According to my calculations the blog made $2,877.88 in profit which is a staggering 475% increase from last month’s $605.28. That works out as roughly £1781.85 in real money.

Consultation Earnings

Although I’m not including consultation earnings as part of the blog earnings, the leads are generated directly from the blog.

I actually class the consultation work as separate projects entirely but still want to report on them

This month saw $1,129.00 / £700.00 in consultation work which is slightly less than last month’s $1,214.64.

If you need help increasing your earnings online then get in touch. The proof is in the pudding.

Help Me Help You

Although the blog is growing at a nice rate I still need your help!

I put an awful lot of time into producing some of the best SEO tutorials on the web.

If you want to say thanks then please share them with others. It takes less than a minute for you to-

  • Start a thread on a forum
  • Write about them on your blog
  • Share them with your list (your subscribers will love you)
  • Leaving a comment on a post

Every little helps so please don’t be shy!

Signing Off

Overall it has been a pretty important month for the blog in terms of growth. With more than double the amount of unique visitors and new subscribers the blog has increased earnings per visitor from $0.30 to $0.64.

It is also great to see that traffic from Google is on the rise without building a single link myself ;)

I’ve got some interesting stuff coming up for you this month as well as a new competition so stick around!

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for joining me on this journey.
