Monthly Income, Growth & Traffic Report – November 2013

This is the 16th income report as part of the zero link building case study.

Every month I will publish a post like this one that shows you how this blog is progressing and everything I have done across the month to get it there.

These reports will help me track my own progress while teaching you what to do and more importantly what not to do.

How to start a successful blog in 7 days

What I Have Done In November

November has been a challenging month to say the least!

After recovering from last months illness and lack of posts I really pushed forward with the blog this month.

I’ve also set the launch date for my free private SEO tool.

Last month I fell just $144.21 short of my elusive $10,000 target! Am I finally going to reach my goal this month?

Only one way to find out!

Content Creation

Last months I only managed 4 posts in total, but this month that has jumped to 9!

We started with an updated Kontent Machine tutorial!

There were also 2 awesome guest posts, with Lewis Ogden’s how to build an ecommerce website with wordpress tutorial.

I took a look at why Raven Tools should not be trusted which sparked a lot of controversy online.

I put 3 backlink checking services to the test in the best backlink checker showdown.

I also dug out all of the very best black friday & cyber monday internet marketing deals for you!

Let’s not forget the regular income report roundup & what I have read this month features.

Blog Features

The blog has also had a few features throughout November. First of all I shared my advice on how to produce amazing content with ease.

Once you have great content then you need to work out how to monetise it and last but not least, the best way to promote it.

Thanks to Aaron for the dedicated write up here!

Enhanced Email Engagement Sequence

Way back in January 2013 I setup an email autoresponder sequence with Aweber.

The purpose of this was to breathe new life into old posts while keeping readers constantly engaged with the site on complete auto pilot!

This used to have a total of 20 emails, one sent per week. I re-wrote everything from the ground up in Aweber and there is now a total of 57 emails set up in the autoresponder.

Autoresponder Engagement Sequence

My Private SEO Tool

Nearly a year after first mentioning it – my private SEO tool is finally ready to be released.

This will be 100% free for all of my readers to download and use!

Private Tool

I will have this in your hands on December 12th – so keep your eyes peeled!

Inbound All Time #1

My post about Raven Tools quickly went viral and was soon attracting interest at Inbound.

This eventually became the #1 story of all time on Inbound, until they deleted it :(

Although I only managed to grab a screenshot when it was sat at #3 all time =/

Thanks to Jacob King for submitting the story!

Affiliate Summit Award

Affiliate SummitAffiliate Summit is one of the biggest affiliate marketing conferences ran by Shawn Collins and Missy Ward.

They wanted to know which was the best affiliate marketing blog of 2013.

Well the results are in-

  • 1st Place: MatthewWoodward.co.uk (38% votes)
  • 2nd Place: ZacJohnson.com (18% votes)
  • 3rd Place: Dekh.com/Blog (16% votes)

A huge thank you to all of my readers that voted for the blog – it really is appreciated and makes all the hard work worth it.

Thank you again guys – I couldn’t of done that without each and every one of you.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Earlier in the month Shawn Matthews got in touch and invited me to be part of their new documentary.

The documentary focuses on digital nomads and those that have broken free from the confines of traditional work.

We did the shoot at Google Campus in London last week which went smoothly!

I’ll release more details about this when I’m allowed to do so :)

Crunching The Numbers

So let’s get our hands dirty and take a look at what my hard work has done for me this month.

Visitor Statistics

Unique visitors increased nicely last month to 27,468 (886/day) which has grown to 31,509 (1,050/day) this month.

That is a huge increase and finally breaking the 1,000 uniques per day barrier!

Visitor Analytics

Most Popular Content

The most popular content this month is made up of the controversial Raven Tools post, the Ecommerce SEO post and Lewis’s niche research post.

Most Popular Content

Top Traffic Sources

Google Organic traffic is by far the most popular traffic source and takes the top spot for the 3rd month in a row.

Great to see traffic from social channels and Inbound on the rise to add a bit of diversity in the traffic sources!

Top Traffic Analytics

Search Engine Traffic

Last month search traffic was grew to 23,446 (756 per day) which has now jumped upto 26,874 (895 per day).

Google is certainly playing nicely with my SEO without link building experiment.

Search Traffic Analytics

YouTube Views

I lost all of my historical YouTube views because of changes I made to the branding – so I keep track of them separately.

Last month save 18,917 views which has increased to 20,015 this month!

The main YouTube metric I like to track though is minutes watched which increased to 107,060 from last months 104,632.

That still means people spent a total of 74.3 days watching my videos across the last 30 days! That’s at least 2 people watching every minute of every day!

Youtube Views

Social Shares

The blog has seen a total of 26,847 shares across Facebook, Twitter and Google+ this month compared to 24,167 last month.

  • Google+ – 5,178 (4,365 last month)
  • Twitter – 12,875 (11,768 last month)
  • Facebook – 8,794 (8,034 last month)

My Forum Statistics

There were 468 new users, 49 new topics and 234 new replies on the forum this month.

If you haven’t joined the forum yet, get involved!

I’ll personally answer any internet marketing questions you have!

  • Users: 3,602 (3,134 last month)
  • Topics: 841 (792 last month)

The most important metric on the entire blog – earning a subscription from someone is the ultimate form of commitment and conversion.

This month brought 1,506 new subscribers across various channels which is up from last month’s 1,419.

There are now a total of 15,760 subscribers across all of the different channels.

  • E-mail – 313 (767 last month) / Total: 6,993
  • Twitter – 210 (192 last month) / Total: 2,217
  • YouTube – 315 (309 last month) / Total: 2,532
  • Facebook – 144 (126 last month) / Total: 1,064
  • Google+ – 300 (250 last month) / Total: 2,241
  • RSS – 224 (-225 last month) / Total: 713

Forum Promotion Posts

With everything going on this month I haven’t had much time to kick back on forums for some promotion work.

Hopefully, I’ll pick up the slack in time for the next report though :)

  • TrafficPlanet – 0 posts (230 visits)
  • WarriorForum – -3 posts (248 visits)
  • BlackHatWorld – 4 posts (1,006 visits)

Income Report

Here are the numbers you really want to see-

Affiliate Earnings

Consultation Earnings

I separate out my SEO consultant earnings from the affiliate earnings. The blog drives affiliate sales directly and whilst it does generate SEO consultation leads these are separate projects in their own right.

I only did a couple hours of consultation work this month which saw earnings drop from $964.20 to $331.53.

Earnings Total

  • Affiliate Income – $11,174.83
  • Consultation Income – $331.53
  • Expenses – $99.00

Grand Total: $11,407.36 / £6,960.37 ($9,855.79 / £6,177.63 last month)

How to start a successful blog in 7 days

Wooop! I finally managed to break the elusive $10,000 month target and by quite a way as well!

Now let’s see if I can drive a $15,000 month in December!

Signing Off

Well it has certainly been a roller coaster month – I’m absolutely exhausted but its totally worth it!

Not only did I finally break my $10,000 goal but I also secured the Affiliate Summit award.

I set the launch date for my private SEO tool and will be featured in an upcoming documentary.

December is looking just as busy but hopefully I can squeeze a quick break in at some point!

Onwards and upwards to the next goal, a $15,000 month!

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for joining me on this journey.

Hi, this is impressive earning with different sources instead of lying on single source, you’ve well diversified your earnings.

Do you think Facebook is a good earning source? I have big communities over 100k followers on different niches but seems very hard to monetize this. Any ideas?

  2. vietnamrum

Your traffic reports are fantastic. Your detailed reports are second to none.

Great news that you have passed the $10,000 a month target.
Congrats on the first place at the Affiliate Summit affiliate marketing blog of 2013.

    Thanks Vietnamrum.

    Hey Matt,

Was looking at your traffic stats and wondering how you were able to keep your bounce rate so low at 3.99% That is a feat in itself! Great work though dude.

Great report man. These income reports are what keep people honest. I have alway kept mine private but these posts make me want to put it all out there and teach others. My best month ever was 27k but I have never been able to reproduce it. Oh the power of reddit and digg.

  10. Nuno

    Hi Matt,
my name is Nuno and I love your blog. I have a question. In the expenses you only report hosting expenses.
Don’t you have expenses with aweber, product subscriptions that you use?

If it was possible to you to explain how do you make this incoming reports. I want to start one of my own, and it would be helpfull to see how you do yours

    Keep up the good work.

    • Matthew Woodward
      December 11th, 2013 at 9:21 am

      Hi Nuno,

That is a good point actually. I already had aweber from other projects so it wasn’t a new cost but you are right a portion of that cost should be reflected in the reports now I think about it!

  11. Tony Nguyen

As what I already said, I knew that you’re going to break the record this month :)

By the way, you’ll soon have an affiliate commission from WPEngine, that’s my little contribution to your next month target.

By the way, I appreciate what you’ve done so far for your readers bro. I look forward to reading future wonderful posts

      Thanks Aaron!

  13. yombee

Hmm. I posted a pretty long and enthusiastic comment about your sucess hitting the 10k and your job here earlier but either it has been filtered or something went wrong on my side.
Anyway. I was wondering, seeing your youtube analytic chart, why dont you monetize it?
I heard about guys complaining being banned from adsense just days after they linked their years old adsense account to a youtube channel.
    Is that the reason?

    • Matthew Woodward
      December 8th, 2013 at 3:02 pm

Comments must be approved first :) Just catching up on them all now!

Because there are downsides to monetising your youtube channel, such as introducing even more distractions to getting them on your list :)

  14. Yombee

10K/ Month ? Let me say that imho you deserve it and much more.

You educate people for free in a domain where some “gurus” try to get big money for sometimes poor contents.

What kind of money a university or school would make having like 30 000 students/month in a field of knowledge like “money on web you can make alone with minimal investment” ? Ok that would be a long title but you get the picture…

I didnt find such an HONEST AND REALLY INFORMATIVE blog like yours for months.

I follow some others blogs like Pat Flint and for me you are both on the top step of the podium. Different approches, different tools but same quality content.

But well… Seeing your audience figures, you dont need me to figure it out…

I dont know much in that field of expertise wich is yours, but the expertise I got, I owe it to you. Thanks Matt.

Everytime I’ll need some of those tools you share with us be sure that I’ll use your affiliate links to buy them. Once again you deserve it. If you guys thinks like I do please do the same.

I prefer to see Matt and his philosophy at 50 000$ a month than those sharks around the web.

PS : and no, I am not Matt friend in disguise :p

  15. Robert Kirk

Congratulations Matthew on breaking your 10k mark, 15k here you come!

Congratulations on hitting the 10k mark. I like the way you have spread your income over several software items.

But are they all based on this website? If so, don’t you think that can cause a risk for you income?

  18. Kevin Choi

    Congraz for the $10k milestone!!
And what the ___ with your bounce rate!??
Is the 3% bounce rate real!! That really unbelievable.

Wow! Congrats. Your success shows that it is possible to make it without trying to con google algo. I am currently studying your posts on warrior forum to understand how your posts are constructed and how they drive such levels of traffic. It is easier to learn from successful people other than try to chart your own course of action. Once again thanks.

  24. Quinton Hamp @ The Lost Cyclist

Wow! An award and the $10k mark in 1 month!!!! Good work!

I love how your income isn’t congregated all in one area. You have so many little streams that add up to a significant portion. That’s a super-smart way to do it!

    • Matthew Woodward
      December 2nd, 2013 at 8:34 pm

      Thanks Quinton :)

  25. rschmitz

Its rare that I’ve purchased anything online and avoided buyers remorse. Places like warriorforum made me believe that MMO was just one huge pyramid scheme, even something as cheap as a $10 WSO left me feeling disgusted having wasted my time and money.

Luckily I found this site. Its weird, I’ve dropped hundreds of dollars on tools here but actually feel good about giving you my money, because at this point I’m just giving back for all that I’ve already received. What a strange feeling.

  26. Andrew

Congratulations on hitting the $10,000 mark!

That is something most people dream of especially to make it working on trains!

How about a real niche site? Its one thing to sell opportunity tools, its another to create a site like Best Survival Knife and actually earn from the niche.

So come on Mathew, you can do it! Research a niche and monetize it. Just like the rest of us poor schmucks.

    Hey Matt (Cutt)

I referred to your income reports in one of my posts and was glad to find you around.

Maybe you should forget about that consultancy thing and focus on Affiliate marketing ;)

    • Matthew Woodward
      December 2nd, 2013 at 8:39 pm

      Thanks for the share :)

I have considered that but I have a few longer term clients I enjoy working with and I’m very selective about who I take on.

  37. Steve

Inspirational stuff Matt, really enjoy these month end reports, certainly gives me a lot of enthusiasm for my own journey.

One thing I’ve been meaning to ask, is about Pareto’s theory, our the 80:20 rule. If you put all your affiliate earnings in a spreadsheet, I bet you’d get 80% of your income from 20% of your accounts, do you think it’s a good idea to then concentrate more on the articles and sponsors who are making you the most money and drop all the other ones who aren’t? Targeting your efforts might seem counter intuitive but it could help you grow and hit your next target!!!!

    • Matthew Woodward
      December 2nd, 2013 at 8:43 pm

      Thanks Steve!

No because its the ones that don’t make money that teach you how to make money. Getting sites penalised is one of the best things you can do to learn/evolve with the algo.

  38. Monathoo

Congratulations Matt! I refer to your blog everyday. Have learnt a lot and continue to do so. I just hope that one of these days I can get to the stage you are at. Obviously it has taken a lot of hard work and I know if I strive, I will achieve success eventually.

As Bruce Lee said “Success is not a destination, it’s a journey… Believe in yourself and you will be successful”

Well done and keep up the good work!
