What I Have Read This Month – October 2013

This is the 11th post in the What I have Read This Month series which shares all of my favourite articles over the past month.

There is an awful lot of junk to sort through every month so here are the best bits according to me!

What I Have Read This Month

There have been some great posts this month as Google has caused a fair few rumblings in the world of SEO.

Don’t worry though – there are plenty of hints and tips to help you through the algo update blues!

SEO & Link Building

Quite a lot to cover with SEO & link building this month but let’s start with the basics!

There have been a whole lot of changes to the Google search algo recently so make sure your tracking those changes!

There are lots of things you can do to fix a Google penalty though, although Torrent sites are having a hard time.

It is good to know that Google won’t penalise you for broken HTML or using guest posts in moderation but more changes are coming.

Just take a look at how much the SERPS have changed now & Google have broken PR updates!

But that does mean you can take advantage of new opportunity like in-depth articles and more rich snippets.

You should still be building backlinks though with these quick wins or this sneaky method!

Link building doesn’t have to be boring though, if your creative link building can be fun.

If all else fails don’t forget to optimise for Bing and integrate the all new Klout/Bing Authorship partnership.

O aprender a hablar espanol. Yo practico todos los dias!

Social Media

The social media world brings us a fantastic case study along with some great advice to create your own sustainable social media strategy.

Just like Google, Facebook have their own ranking algorithm for the news feed. Make sure your taking advantage of that.

There are a bunch of things you can do with LinkedIn to make sure you reach more people as well.

Make sure you keep track of your efforts with social media analytics tools.

Content / Blogging

I have shared my blog promotion strategy before but it’s great to see it working for others as well!

32 experts share their own promotional tips that will help you build traffic with ease!

It is always a good idea to have a blogging schedule with a simple editorial calendar though!

Other Bits

Are you making the most of your email marketing? I bet you didn’t think about doing things like this though!

You can also make use of these fantastic Google Analytics filters to track web email users!

Not so long ago I shared the best marketing TED talks, here are 10 more motivation talks for you to sit back and relax with!

Those were some great posts Matthew.
I really liked the two posts to build high quality backlinks. You do an amazing work on sharing the links to these awesome posts so that we too can get some knowledge.
Great work mate. Keep it up :)

  2. Thanks for the links. In terms of “quick wins”, I’m ranking #22 for a phrase with 6600 exact match searches a month and all I did was put one article on Ezinearticles. Strangely effective at the moment.

      I agree Matt

Week-ends are for learning and implementing new stuff into our business.

Always be learning – it’s easy to get left behind online!

Nice roundup as always, Matt! Saves me from subscribing to all these other sites only to realize that 99% is just fluff content. Wish this was a weekly thing, though…

    • October 28th, 2013 at 8:43 am

You don’t think weekly would be to much?

      • October 28th, 2013 at 9:10 am

        Absolutely not too much. )

      • October 28th, 2013 at 10:58 am

It would probably depend on how much quality there is out there. It would be too much only if you start putting sub standard quality in the post..

        • October 29th, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Thats true! I could perhaps do it bi-weekly.

I’ll put it to the wider audience in my next email :)

I seriously just spent most of my morning reading most of these articles. There are many good nuggets of knowledge here. The 32 expert bloggers post is definitely one of those “epic linkable posts” that is a good template to get your website / blog started.

Haha sorry about that, these round ups should come with a time warning :P

I recently checked my rankings on my sites and SERPs have most definitely changed it’s crazy.

Also, that Kaiser The Sage post is pretty awesome. If anyone hasn’t read it, you should check it out.

I save all the messages from smart folks I follow in my READ LATER folder in Outlook. CLEARLY I need to get in there and catch up more often – you have produced some great stuff these past few months since I visited your site. I love the layout above, I send my SEO clients a similar message once a month but all the links make it a lot easier for them to dig deeper if they wish (without explaining each subject) Love it – thanks for sharing!
