The Simple 2 Step SEO Process That Delivers Crazy Results


SEO doesn’t have to be complicated, often it is the simplest strategies that are the most effective.

I have worked to improve search engine rankings & traffic for hundreds of clients with great success.

We don’t really do anything special, the SEO process often boils down to-

  1. On Site Audit – A technical SEO audit fixing all issues while also developing a keyword strategy compromised of short terms quick wins & long term core terms
  2. Link Building – Carefully deploying an effective link building campaign from relevant sites

Of course every site, niche & client is different which requires bespoke strategies in not only the keywords you target but also how you build the links.

But for the most part, it boils down to nothing more than a high level technical SEO audit & an effective link building campaign.

So today I am going to share with you the results from 2 different clients.

Case Study #1 – Furniture E-Commerce

The first case study I want to share with you is from an online retailer that sells high end furniture & home wares.

They were having major problems gaining traction in the search results because the top 20 results are dominated by huge brands like Ikea, Tesco & John Lewis.

However – by following the simple 2 step strategy above in just 6 months, we were able to-

  • Increase organic search traffic by 122.27%
  • Increase e-commerce transactions by 336%
  • Which resulted in a 369% / £165,586 increase in revenue


Those are the kind of numbers that completely transform businesses, especially when you consider monthly e-commerce transactions from organic search increased from 110 to 480.

Case Study #2 – Real Estate Lead Generation

The second case study I want to show you today is from the highly competitive world of real estate, specifically the buying & selling of residential houses.

The real estate niche is highly competitive from an SEO perspective with many professional SEO’s competing to generate leads to resell to realtors for huge profits.

Unfortunately, this means that the top 10 results are highly optimised with powerful highly manipulated link profiles.

This meant that this client had no option but to spend a small fortune every month with Google Adwords to drive new traffic & leads.

So we developed a strategy that focused on increasing search visiblity for longer tail, conversion focused keywords while taking care of a range of issues we discovered during our technical SEO audit.

After just 7 months we were able to-

  • Increased organic search traffic by 93.91%
  • Increased the number of leads by 191.6%
  • Secure 21 top 3 positions & 40 top 10 positions
  • Triple monthly revenue from search traffic alone


That has resulted in an extra total annual revenue of £37,800 from organic search traffic while significantly reducing recurring monthly Google Adwords costs.

Keep It Simple Stupid

One of my favorite sayings of all time is to ‘Keep It Simple Stupid’.

It’s a philosophy that I try to apply to every aspect of my life, from ranking websites to training for Ironman.

I often see threads in forums offering up crazily complicated advice to increase search engine rankings while 99% of the time all people need to do is fix on site problems & build powerful links.

Fixing Onsite Problems

When I say fix on site problems I am talking about things like broken links, duplicate titles/meta descriptions, pages with no title/meta descriptions, URL strucutre, internal linking, duplicate content and so on.

Basically if you run a crawl, you don’t want to see things like this-

You want to make sure that you are seeing results like this-


Many people skip over things like that and are blinded with just building as many links as possible, but there is no point building links unless you have built a solid SEO foundation.

Building Links

When it comes to link building you should be focusing on getting links from highly authoritative domains that are relevant to your niche.

That might sound like hard work but there are 2 really easy ways to go about doing that depending on your budget.

You can either do manual outreach and guest posts to authoritative sites in your niche or you can build your own network of domains which I taught here.


The third way of doing things is a combination of the 2 – mixing guest posts with a network of relevant authoritative domains is a lethal combination that will topple the most competitive of niches.

So if you are struggling to increase search engine traffic & sales, remember – just keep it simple stupid!

    *sad face* it again seems that most of this is reliant on linking, but working in the affiliate business I’m in there is pretty much no option of getting authority links or finding a service to provide those links. Every time I see someone talking about getting links for SEO benefit they always leave it so vague, saying “it can be hard” and “keep at it”… it’s nearly impossible to get links from high authority sites, that’s just the truth. Unless you’re in the SEO business and you can pimp each other out (easily done, because you both benefit from that and can then use the stats to push your SEO services giving the impression that it can be done, when really that benefit is specific to you in your industry) there is no real way to do this for many other industries because it’s all one-sided.

    Basically, it’s easy for people in the SEO field to get all these links, because they all benefit from delivering impressive stats to sell their services.

      I’ve succesfully ranked sites for clients in niches like transgender adult phone lines, commercial construction, adult massage parlours, illicit drugs & supplements, marine services and many more weird niches – so I do not agree with your comment.

      On the surface it seems like you have a very closed mindset which is stopping you from seeing the woods for the trees and theres a number of tutorials on this blog that enable you to build quality links in any niche.

      Yes a lot of the time, you can also use Screaming Frog which is free for small sites but no way near as comprehensive – eg it wont find duplicate content

    Fully agree with you, Matthew. These are definitely the two main components for success. On-Page audit & optimization is easy compared to building links. Less competitive niche can see good results from On-SIte Audit alone.

    I know right? It’s so simple, you just have to build a solid foundation and 50% of the times that’s enough to outrank any low competition keyword. Keep writing relevant blog articles while you’re at it and watch the site grow organically. No need to “game” the Google’s algorithm.

    These are just two steps, but there are a lot of things to get done to do these 2 steps. Some people building backlinks without performing on site audit. A SEO site audit is a critical first step that SEOs must undertake to understand the state of SEO.

    Amazing post as usual, Matt. I really love the simplicity of it: link building and auditing, that’s it!

    IMO, link building without doing a full SEO audit FIRST is often like trying to polish a t*** (not a saying I expect you hear too often in Costa Rica, ha!), as there are often deep-rooted on-site problems that won’t be fixed by building a few extra links. Sure, extra links pretty much always helps, but on-site problems will always just make them less effective. It’s often easier to fix the on-site errors than build a bunch of great links (as that’s fully under your control).

    Having said all that, I’d personally introduce one extra step to your two-step process: analysis/analytics.

    I’ve worked with so many people (and been guilty of it myself in the past) who are spending serious cash on building links and whatnot, but not setting up or looking at their analytics properly. IMO, there’s NO way you can make informed decisions as to where you should build links or focus your attention without proper analytics. There’s also no way to know what ISN’T working either, and if you can’t do that, you’re wasting time/money/effort.

    My personal “formula” goes something like this:

    Learn (e.g. audit) > Execute (e.g. fix on-site errors, build links, etc.) > Analyse (i.e. Google Anaytics – to see what’s working and what isn’t) > Adjust (keep doing the things that are working, stop doing the things that aren’t)

    Repeat. Repeat. Repeat! (and never stop!)

    BTW, I’d love to see how you do an SEO audit yourself (an idea for a blog post, perhaps?). Do you just use Deepcrawl/SF or other things too?

    Oh, and I almost forgot, how’s the Ironman prep coming along? :)

      Yes you are right and you would be amazed how much resistance business/site owners give when you dare to criticise their on page SEO. Often telling you to ignore that and just build links /facepalm

      With analytics if it’s an established site that is doing well in search then yes, there are some golden nuggets often tucked away in there but for the most part people are fine with the default setup and a goal conversion here and there.

      I could do a more detailed post about audits with some real life examples I suppose, great idea!

      Ironman training is killing me and sucking all of my energy haha, I’m told it’s going to get harder!

    Hey Matthew, hope all is good with you. Nice work on this piece of content, again just a top rate piece of content. I like to use the site audit by semrush, they seem to do a fairly through job. They seem to list all of the main problems that could be causing problems, broken links, url problems, then they talk about the title tags, description tags, to long, to short or maybe you don’t even have one. They also talk about the alt text if you have alt text or maybe you dont. So like i say the semrush site audit is good for sure, with free account you can only do one, but there are ways around that as i am sure you know.     It’s studies like this that are so intriguing. This article shows how real companies were able to make real growth by utilizing SEO strategies.     Many SEO’s overlook the importance of on-page factors. I recently had a client who actually had got to the middle of page 2 on her own in an easy local niche. After we analyzed the site, fix errors in wmt, did 301 redirects, fixed some of the structural issues and optimized for her kw’s the site started moving on it’s own. Links are not always the answer. Sometimes the sites is just holding itself down.
