Monthly Income, Growth & Traffic Report – August 2015

PLEASE SHARE

This is the 35th income report as part of the zero backlink experiment.

Every month I will publish a post like this one that shows you how this blog is progressing and everything I have done across the month to get it there.

These reports will help me track my own progress while teaching you what to do and more importantly what not to do.

What I Have Done In August

After 3 months without an internet connection at the house, at the start of the month they finally ran a line to the house and connected everything up.

Luckily I have been able to manage all of my businesses using an old Motorola G Android handset as a router and tanning through mobile data like there is no tomorrow.

So I spent most of this month catching up on those ‘non critical but still important’ tasks after spending a week in Miami with a client.

I have also been heavily invested working away on a project that has been in development for the past few months.

Here is a sneak peak at the backed Infusionsoft Campaign Builder sequence I’ve been working on the past couple of days-

Screenshot_090115_102542_AM

There is still a lot of work to do but the finish line is in sight!

Last month the blog made more money that it has ever made before, so I’m expecting a sharp drop into reality this month as my time has been heavily invested elsewhere.

Content Creation

Last month I dialed down the posting schedule from 7-9 per month to around 4-5.

I’m still waiting to measure the impact of that change but after running the ship like that for a couple of months ago that data should start to seep through.

This month a total of 5 posts were published compared to last months 7. We started with the budget lead generation marketing strategies that any business can use.

Then we look at how to get more email subscribers quickly followed by how to start a successful blog in 90 days.

Other than those we just had the regular income report roundup post but I chose not to publish the best of internet marketing again this month.

Crunching The Numbers

So let’s get our hands dirty and take a look at what my lack of attention to the blog has done to the important metrics.

Visitor Statistics

With a drop in posts eventually came a drop in traffic from 61,943 (1,998/day) to 51,140 (1,649/day) which is a heavy drop.

My current goal is to build traffic to be stable at 60,000 per month or more.

I could increase my post rate again to recover that, but that’s boring – instead I’m going to invest heavily in Facebook ads this month to promote new content.

Most Popular Content

The 90 day blogging strategy stole the show this month!

My time tested SEO strategy also managed to hold its own with the budget lead generation marketing plan close behind.

aug-analytics-content

Top Traffic Sources

Like last month the top 10 traffic sources haven’t changed that much at all.

aug-analytics-traffic

Search Engine Traffic

Traffic from Google held relatively steady this month at 39,906 (1,287/day) compared with 41,226 (1,329/day) last month.

aug-analytics-kws

YouTube Views

I lost all of my historical YouTube views because of changes I made to the branding – so I keep track of them separately.

I published a total of 7 vidoes last month and a dedicated keyword research playlist to increase viewership.

Last month views jumped to 28,976 but have dropped to 22,181 this month as I didn’t publish any new videos.

Total minutes watched also took a heavy drop from 157,555 to 111,497.

youtube-stats

Social Shares

I have temporarily removed this section while I find a better solution to collect the data

Subscribers

The most important metric on the entire blog – earning a subscription from someone is the ultimate form of commitment and conversion.

This month brought 2,328 new subscribers which is roughly in line with last months 2,518.

There are now a total of 119,582 subscribers across all of the various channels!

  • E-mail – 1,438 (1,611 last month) / Total: 64,838
  • Twitter – 270 (285 last month) / Total: 9,648
  • YouTube – 292 (358 last month) / Total: 8,850
  • Facebook – 186 (266 last month) / Total: 17,939
  • Google+ – 17 (21 last month) / Total: 17,839
  • RSS – 125 (-23 last month) / Total: 468

Income Report

Here are the numbers you really want to see-

Affiliate Earnings

ATTENTION: Learn My Secrets With Instant Access To The Income Report Archive

Expenses

Consultation Earnings

I separate out the consultation earnings from the affiliate earnings. The blog drives affiliate sales directly and whilst it does generate consultation leads these are separate projects in their own right.

I didn’t take on any consultation work this month which results in zero consultation earnings.

Other Income

I’m working on another project right now that is part of the blog but not something I’m ready to talk about publicly yet or maybe ever.

I will declare the income here though as it wouldn’t be possible without the blog and ‘technically’ it is affiliate income.

Last month saw $10,759.96 and that saw a small drop to this month at $9,679.15 but no way near as big as previous drops.

Earnings Total

  • Affiliate Income – $13,918.40
  • Consultation Income – $00.00
  • Other Income – $9,679.15
  • Expenses – $127.39

Grand Total: $23,470.16 / £15,328.95 ($35,209.35 / £22,538.32 last month)

Signing Off

Last month saw the biggest traffic and income month to date and with my time being spent elsewhere this month I expected to see a big drop.

Posting less means I need to invest more in promotion instead of relying on emails to you guys to announce new content.

So I’m going to fire up a range of Facebook campaigns to help with that promotion and bring traffic levels to a stable 60,000 per month.

That will also give me the time I need to put the finishing touches to a big project this month which should turn income inside out.

Here goes nothing…

Thank you to everyone that has helped me reach my goals – I couldn’t do it without you, the reader!

Welcome back Matthew ! we’re glad to see these numbers in your income report, it shows that internet lifestyle is worth time and energy spent Gold.
keep up the good work and never lose faith people ! Everything is possible 😉

  2. 9.1.2015

Haha #5 on search engine traffic. Good update.

Are you mainly posting content to your own site or are you also posting on other sites e.g. linkedin being a popular b2b site with potential to get picked up by popular bloggers, or sites that are more niche and related to blogging and making money online.

Have you noticed any measurable results when it comes to the quality of traffic posting on other sites as opposed to your own? I would assume that the conversions would be higher on your own site but then again, if you are posting on another site you may be seen as a thought leader and (expert) so the conversions might be higher. I haven’t tried so I don’t know. Would be an interesting case study. (Posting on your own vs posting on another site for traffic and comparing several different strategies). It’s a common question that a lot of bloggers have (how to balance where to post content).

    • September 2nd, 2015 at 2:31 pm

I post on this site for the most part, occasionally I will post elsewhere usually as part of a case study but not so often really

are you going to share your infusionsoft campaigns

    • September 1st, 2015 at 6:41 pm

Probably not :) Maybe some unblurred screenshots to people that buy via my link

follow up to last question. It would be great if you did an indepth tutorial on building an autoresponder machine that could plug into any business

  5. 9.1.2015

    Not bad at all. Congratulations.
It’s impressive that you have a stable income and subscriber signup rate even though you were without an internet connection at your house for 3 months. That’s a sign of strong passive income.
Adding Facebook ads to the mix sounds like a logical next step. I’ve never tried it but I heard from other successful bloggers that this is a well working strategy to boost content that is working well elsewhere.
    Cheers!

    • September 1st, 2015 at 6:40 pm

Well I still worked for it and had internet access via mobile data :)

I’ve used Facebook ads a lot with great success (http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/tutorials/facebook-advertising-lead-generation/) but internet wasn’t free flowing recently :)

Cool, haven’t seen this article before. Will go through it.
Btw, the infolink overlays and text replacement are a bit obtrusive imho. I reckon you’ve already planned an article covering infolink. I’m sure they bring in good revenue but would be interesting to see if user engagement goes down.

        • September 2nd, 2015 at 2:27 pm

Already killed them sorry about that :)

            Good move
While I’m at it why are you’re not using disqus or a similar plugin so that the reader doesn’t have to submit their details for each comment? It’s a bit annoying if you respond a couple of times.

          • September 3rd, 2015 at 2:15 pm

It has too much of an impact on site speed

  6. 9.1.2015

Another excellent month, Matthew! Love reading your articles.

Thanks for sharing as always Matthew.

I can see that outsourcing content creation would help me a lot in my business.

  9. 9.1.2015

Hey Matthew. I too had a huge drop in earnings on my site due to personal and dental issues I had to deal with. I am back in full swing this month. If your still doing roundups. I would love to be in the next one.

    Take care

Great Report as always. I come to read this kind of posts just to get some motivation. It makes me feel that there is no impossible

  11. 9.1.2015

Not bad income from not doing much in the month.

    Good work.

    • September 1st, 2015 at 6:36 pm

Oh I did a bunch, just not on the blog specifically :)

  12. 9.1.2015

Oh wow brother! you new infolinks are super annoying. Btw, great month.

    • September 1st, 2015 at 6:36 pm

Yeah sorry about that, testing them for a possible sponsored post and they haven’t tuned the volume down yet =/

      • September 1st, 2015 at 11:45 pm

Agree, infolinks is a big no no on a site… I always immediately click away if I see those.

  13. 9.1.2015

    1st? :)

    9.1.2015

Long time reader and I usually don’t comment but can you get rid of those stupid Infolinks? Not only does it make this blog look like one of those spammy Facebook page websites that always pop up I thought your website had a virus.

Please don’t become on of those blogs who uses stupid a** adverts like this. You make enough from affiliate marketing and I’m sure your smart enough to figure other ways to increase income without using these silly things. I would have to move onto other blogs I guess.

    Matt,
Is true that Infusionsoft has a $3k setup fee upfront ?

    • September 2nd, 2015 at 2:27 pm

$2k but its negotiable to say the least AND you get a bunch of hands on 1 on 1 implementation and training which is super handy

  16. Wow Matt,
This is so awesome. Crossing 20k per month is no child play at all man and I’m very happy for you.

    Congratulations.

From your product reviews, i see that you’re promoting Active Campaign, is that what you’re using now? If yes, how’s their service like?

    Thanks for sharing.

  17. 9.2.2015

    Hi Matt,

Super month! Keep up the inspired work.

Just found out that my wife and I are heading to Grenada, Nicaragua for a few months starting in October. If we are heading to CR we should meet.

    Have a fab week!

    Ryan

  18. 9.2.2015

Wow! So great! I also want to have income like you but it’s very hard for me.

Inspiring report once again. Keep it up !

Your email subscribers, is that 65,000 you currently have access to? Or is that 65,000 new additions since you started your blog (which excludes unsubscribes?)

    • September 7th, 2015 at 12:42 pm

Whatever the subscriber column adds up to across all of the lists that are related to this blog (I have other lists for other sites within aweber that are excluded from that number)

  22. 9.6.2015

Nice income again! I wonder why you don’t get a higher number with affiliate hosting. Or maybe you don’t promote too much hosting but more the tools to work?

    • September 7th, 2015 at 12:40 pm

I’ve never really put a big focus on it but I have seen others make a killing with it

  23. 9.6.2015

very inspiring keep up the good work man :)

  24. 9.6.2015

    Hi Matt,

It’s good to see that you’re making a nice earning from a wide range of affiliates. Sometimes I hear about people who just rely on a couple sources and when one is taken away, it results in a big drop in income.

Hope the FB ads are going well for you. I’m still trying to work up the courage to fiddle with all the steps needed to make ads! I hear they can have very good ROI though.

After I hit submit on this post, I’ll share it with other people and click the “tweet” button – I think they’ll be inspired by the awesome work you’ve done so far Matt!

    Melissa

    • September 7th, 2015 at 12:39 pm

Thanks for the share Melissa :)

I need to improve my FB ad campaign but they are working pretty well overall :)

  25. 9.8.2015

What post on blackhatforum gave you such a large traffic. I will love to check it.

  26. 9.9.2015

This is so so so inspiring and it is why I decided to launch my blog! However, money aside, what I am struggling with my new blog is getting the audience. I am not sure if I am doing the right thing but if anyone has any advice, I would gladly listen :-)
Another great month with great work, Matthew!!

  27. 9.14.2015

Hello Mathew, i notice you no longer earning commissions from Bluehost, why is that? Bluehost was your major source of affiliate income.

  28. Hopeteen
    9.21.2015

Welcome back Matthew ! we’re glad to see these numbers in your income report

  29. 9.21.2015

I do have a polite inquiry. I can’t seem to find any affiliate ads on your website. So I’m assuming all of these affiliate earnings are from the contextual links placed within content (over time) and via emailing your subscribers list?

Just curious if you can share the top 1-3 affiliates earning channels / mediums – i hope you got what I mean by now :)

    • September 23rd, 2015 at 11:19 am

I don’t have any direct adverts and I also never send affiliate links to my email list.

You can look at all of the earnings since day 1 here http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/income-reports/ but which is the top earning channels/medium is irrelevant, it’s the vehicle that’s important.

      • September 24th, 2015 at 2:44 am

Ahan. You don’t have any direct adverts and neither you send affiliate offers / ads / inks via email, than how do you materialize those affiliate earnings? I mean where are you getting those affiliate dollars from via this website?

Do you place contextual affiliate links within your content? Or do product reviews?

I’m sorry if its irritating or maybe over interrogative for you but my only curiosity is for educational purpose – i.e. I do like to understand, if not learn, how you do it.

I will appreciate if you can help me out :)

        • September 25th, 2015 at 11:57 am

Yes they are just contextual links within articles when they are relevant to do so :) Obviously the product reviews are more affiliate focused

  30. 9.23.2015

Glad to hear you finally got your internet all hooked up. I had about a week with no internet over the last month. That was tough, but not too awful with tethering to my phone every so often in a nearby place with enough signal.

I’m quite curious to see how your Facebook ad campaign experiment goes. Hope it works out!

    • September 23rd, 2015 at 11:10 am

Well you’ve got to take the rough with the smooth sometimes :)

  31. 9.29.2015

Great read as always, looking forward to seeing how you get on with Facebook Ad’s as that is something I invest in a little just now but have plans to really increase that over the coming months. Glad you got the internet connected as well, I thought I had it bad when ours went down for 4 days!

Amazing Income Matthew, i’ve been trying to follow your instruction in my email and i’ve got some popularity in my country. Thanks a lot matthew
