A few years ago high PR backlinks from manual blog commenting exploded and became one of the most popular ways to build high PR links quickly and effectively. Way back then they were very powerful especially if you leveraged the strength of high PR comment links.

high PR backlinks from comments

It was incredibly easy to rank pages with nothing but blog comments but then tools like Scrapebox came along and ruined the party for everyone as every man and his dog was blasting hundreds of thousands of comments out per day and they become less effective.

What Are High PR Backlinks?

High PR backlinks are when you get a link to your website from a website that has a high level of authority or page rank. They are considered to be the most powerful type of backlink you can get.

Are High PR Links From Comments Still Effective?

I use high PR links from manual blog commenting as part of my overall link building process but it is difficult to judge if it is still effective as it once was when you are building lots of different links over a number of months.

There is only one way to find out (you know where this is going right?) so I decided to setup my own test and share the results with you!

Can You Rank A Page With High PR Backlinks From Comments?

In this experiment I selected a keyword focused inner page of a website that is already ranking well in the SERPS for its main terms. The inner page I chose had no previous link building work done on it all and was perfect for the purposes of this experiment.

Experiment Details

The page mentioned above was already optimised for the 2 keywords. Keyword 1 naturally ranked at position 62 and keyword 2 ranked at position 69 at the start of the experiment.

Every week for 4 weeks I built 100 new high PR backlinks with comments and ensured every target page had-

  • Less than 50 outbound links
  • A minimum page rank of 1

I did not spread out the link building each week and just built all 100 of them in one go every Tuesday morning. Pretty simple stuff and a few years ago that would have been more than enough to rank for some pretty decent terms.

21st Feb – Experiment Results So Far

I started building the links on the 7th Of February and so far 200 of the 400 planned links have been built.

21st Feb Keyword #1 Rankings (Started at #62)

21st Feb Keyword #1 Rankings

21st Feb Keyword #2 Rankings (Started at #69)

21st Feb Keyword #2 Rankings

So 200 links seems to have a positive uplift so far and I’m sure Google are still playing catch up with finding all the juicy new links. Both keywords have jumped up at least 10 positions or so.

12th March – Ranking Update

Last week I built the final set of the links to the page which has now had at least 400 high PR backlinks from comments built to it over the past 4 weeks. Rankings below-

12th March Keyword #1 Rankings (Started at #62)

12th March Keyword #1 Rankings

12th March Keyword #2 Rankings (Started at #69)

12th March Keyword #2 Rankings

Both keywords have shown fairly decent increases in rank across the past 4 weeks. Keyword #1 has jumped up 23 places so far and keyword #2 has jumped up 25 places although both seem to be jumping between the 40’s and 50’s at the moment.

Google will still be playing catch up with all of the links that have been built so I will update the page again in a couple of weeks with the results of that.

Clearly high PR blog comments do carry some weight and still provide traction with Google although I wouldn’t like to completely rely on them to get me to the number 1 position. You should definitely be using them to support and diversify your existing link building campaigns.

I think you never said which software you've used for this experiment. "High PR Blogs" – is that PR of a homepage or page with the comment? What's the PR range? Can you please give more details? Or maybe PM them to me, if that's not classified :)

Interesting experiment, Matt. Have you tried speeding up the indexing of comments, or did you leave them to be discovered and cached naturally?

This is a bit weird idea I think.
You have to roam around to make some Commenting Backlinks.

Recently, also Penguin 4 arrived with real-time action.
Its right somehow that still DA, PA matters a lo

I see you wrote this post a few months ago I am just wandering if blog commenting still works this days Matt.

  5. 5.10.2013

I’m looking for pages with high PR, but always I found only web sites with high PR, and their pages pr is 0, it’s ok if I comment on these pages?

    • May 15th, 2013 at 9:32 am

Yes thats fine but try and find some pages with PR as well.

In scrapebox once you find a good site, do a scrape then do a bulk PR check on all the results.

  6. Dramaon.Tv

can some one provide me high pr wiki sites.

  7. Zevi

Hi Matt, did you make sure they were dofollow or was it a mix (which to me is 99 nofollow to 1 dofollow)

    • June 12th, 2013 at 8:33 am

I’ve not cared about nofollow/dofollow for longer than I can remember =\

      • Zevi
        June 12th, 2013 at 11:03 am

Very interesting in my opinion, that means that you have seen clear improved SERP results with nofollow links just because they were on high PR.

  8. Wow I think these are great tips.. I will definitely be using this method..

  9. 2.7.2014

    Hey Matthew,

I guess its true that if we comment on high PR blogs, we can get a rank. ;)

    • February 8th, 2014 at 9:47 am

It’s a nice tactic as part of a broader strategy :)

  10. Man88

This is really true when using comment to backlink. Google will change your ranking when you comment more on high PR sites

  11. David

Hey Matthew will this still work in 2014

  12. 5.8.2014

Hey Matt this is just what I was looking for.

I always build my sites with high PR contextual links and a good tier 1 foundation.

I have found a niche where the number 1 site is using nothing but spammy high PR blog comments, that are completely irrelevant to his money site topic.

I wasn’t planning on hitting this niche but I have dug up every single one of his backlinks and was planning to replicate it to a tee, and hopefully achieve similar results.

Sites been around for a year with a 70% exact anchor ratio which I am surprised has not been hit. I was planning on actually making my anchors at healthy levels though.

    Was just wondering:

    1. Do you think this would work effectively?

    2. Is there any reason to suggest that a 70% anchor ratio is a good idea to mimic in this scenario? As hes been around for a year. Defies logic but seems to be working.

    3. Would pointing my good PBNs at this, should the spammy blog comments not be enough be a bad idea? Aka would this orgy of spammy blog comment infested niche site somehow leak s*** to my PBNs by being associated with them?

    Thanks mate

  13. Newton Shah

Really nice tip i’ll must implement on my blog.

  32. 8.11.2015

I keep reading so-called SEO ‘experts’ saying building back links by commenting on blogs doesn’t work in 2015. Well…it does for me :) As long as you don’t spam, and do it gradually, Google still seems to have no problem with it. Of course, like you said though, it has to be part of an overall strategy, not all of it.

  33. 8.23.2015

      • October 10th, 2015 at 4:15 pm

So you tell me that building links is not effective anymore ?

      • November 6th, 2015 at 10:39 pm

I strongly agree with you, Matt. It’s better to take the Domain Authority and Trust Flow into consideration. Both these factors provide more value to determine the authority of a website.

This is really very interesting. Yeah i definitely agree that comment backlinks are still very effective. Lower the OBL is better and also if the site is relevant to yours.

Yes and even better if you can grab one of the first few comments

  65. 11.30.2016

So would I go about doing this by entering my web site here or is it like your form here on every site where I enter my website. Hopefully you can clarify for me how I would actually do this on someones blog post.

    Hi Matthew,
This brings me back to a question. Commenting on hundreds of blogs must be taking fairly good time. Now, these comment links matter because they are quantitatively more and on high PR websites ?
Or getting fewer backlinks from articles would work better ?

    Please advise.

My thought on blog commenting: If Google does not keep a good eye on backlinks, I would like to do the art of blog commenting on high PR sites related to my niche. At least My blog will get popular among readers. Like how we post for our loyal readers, we should treat commenting method as a way to reach the right audience.
